En 1848, alors que débute le règne de Victoria, la peinture anglaise, enlisée dans la convention, semble attendre quon la réveille dun long ennui. Les "Pre-Raphaelite Brothers", par des choix esthétiques radicalement novateurs, vont lui redonner vie. Millais, Rossetti, Hunt sont à lorigine de cette confrérie des Frères préraphaélites. Ils revendiquent une liberté et une authenticité que la peinture a perdues depuis que lacadémisme a imposé Raphaël comme modèle. Soutenus par le critique John Ruskin, qui voit en eux les porte-parole de la modernité, ces jeunes gens - ils ont vingt ans - choisissent pour référence lart médiéval, comme avant eux les architectes néogothiques. Leurs oeuvres témoignent à la fois dun sens de la nature et dune préoccupation sociale. Une seconde génération dartistes, dominée par Edward Burne-Jones et William Morris, appliquera leurs principes au décor, au mobilier, au livre illustré, influençant par son imaginaire lEurope symboliste.
