Victor Tissot (1844 in Friborg – 1917 in Paris) was a Swiss writer and journalist and singer of the Queen of Friborg. In Paris, he collaborated in the editing of the dictionary Larousse. From 1867 he came as professor of the Thudichum school, in Geneva, and as editor of the Gazette de Lausanne. In Paris, ran the Almananch Hachette.
The title Voyage au Pays des Milliards refers to the 5 billion in reparations paid to Germany by defeated France after the war of 1870-71. Victor Tissot, although Swiss, shares the resentment of the defeated French, and seeks to stir up the spirit of revenge and reasons for division. The empire of William I – and his minister von Bismarck – is a threat to peace in Europe. In 1873-74, Tissot made several trips to Germany and Prussia. He delivers “live” correspondence to Parisian newspapers about his visits, meetings, and discoveries. This trip was an immediate success.
The tone is sarcastic, caricatured and polemical, the verve is mocking and the remarks are often exaggerated. Aside from the ironic descriptions of feasts and mountains of sauerkraut, Tissot also knows how to appreciate the architectural masterpieces and the beauty of the cities of southern and central Germany.
Early Edition. First was published in 1875.
